Mourning Etiquette with the Flag
Among the updates that Governor Walz gave last week was the proclamation that all United States flags and Minnesota flags be flown at half-staff at all state and federal buildings on the 19th of each month through 2020. This will be done to remember, mourn, and honor the lives lost due to COVID-19. If your school is able, today is the first opportunity to participate in this memorial.
In addition to this proclamation, we are looking ahead to Memorial Day next Monday, when we honor those that gave their lives for this country. One way to honor their sacrifice is through following the flag code. Below are some parts of the flag code that are especially relevant for schools.
The flag should be displayed during school days in or near every schoolhouse.
The flag should only be displayed from sunrise to sunset, unless it is properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.
The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
On Memorial Day the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff.
Adherence to these rules will help to show that the school is honoring those who, in President Lincoln’s words, “gave last full measure of devotion.” As a disabled veteran-owned company, Civic Intelligence LLC is always available to support schools and governments in addressing flag and veteran policy concerns and beyond. Stay safe and well, and please take a moment to remember those lost to COVID-19 today and every 19th, as well as reflecting on the sacrifices of our lost veterans this weekend.
