Protecting Children During Distance Learning
One of the unfortunate side effects of this extended period of distance learning is the effect that it has on the welfare of children at home. Across the country, child abuse hotlines are reporting fewer calls, likely due to under-reporting of cases. Teachers at your school are required to report child maltreatment, but the current circumstances make that difficult to do. Teachers should continue to be prepared to be a safe adult for their students.
In addition, school boards and administrators should review their Mandated Reporting Policies to ensure they meet current state standards. Teachers should know where and how to report and what information is needed. Remaining vigilant about child abuse is now more important than ever. Having resources refreshed and in place will help staff and students identify and respond to any situation.
