Protecting Employees from Hazards
During the last two weeks, we have examined a couple of policies that affect the health of your students and staff. Today, we’d like to highlight another policy that is not used often in day-to-day operations of the school, but still plays an important role in the health portion of your policy portfolio. That policy is Employee Right to Know- Exposure to Hazardous Substances.
Minnesota requires that employers create a place of employment free from recognized hazards that are likely to cause serious injury or harm to its employees. When your school spans multiple buildings, each building may house unique hazards. Working with your staff, consider a safety audit or walkthrough to take some time to identify areas in the workplace that could cause injury or illness. OSHA is an excellent resource to use to consider different hazards at your school. Once you have identified the hazards, make sure that staff that are routinely exposed to the hazards receive training. Together, you and your team can make your school a safe place to work!
